How to relieve the symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome

At Kirkwood Fyfe we find a number of our patients suffer from Dry Eye Syndrome. Although this is a common condition, it can result in dry or sore eyes and/or blurred vision. The condition tends to affect people above 60, and it is more common in women than men. Around one in 13 people who are in their fifties experience dry eye syndrome, and the condition becomes more common with age.

A great, natural tip for relieving the symptoms of Dry eye syndrome is to eat foods that are high in omega 3. One type of food that will help to alleviate the dryness is oily fish, including salmon, trout, mackerel, herring and sardines. The naturally high oil content from the fish is a great source of omega 3 and helps to reduce the dryness in eyes. Although at Kirkwood Fyfe we are not master chef's, we do like to cook and also like to provide our online community with interesting tips and blog topics. So if you suffer from dry eyes, why not try one of Kirkwood Fyfe's favourite, tried and tested mackerel recipes. It's really easy and you will be rid of the dryness in no time!

Mackerel with Lime & Coriander (serves 4)
Ingredients:
  • 4 small mackerel, trout or sardines
  • 1/4 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/4 ground cumin
  • 4 sprigs of fresh coriander
  • 3 tbsp chopped, fresh coriander
  • 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped
  • grated rind and juice of 1 lime
  • 2 tbsp sunflower oil
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 lime, sliced, to garnish
  • salad leaves, to serve
1.Clean and gut the mackerel, removing the heads if preferred. Place on a chopping board.
2. Sprinkle the fish with the ground spices and salt and pepper to taste. Place a sprig of coriander inside the cavity of each fish
3. Mix together the chopped coriander, chilli, lime rind and juice and the oil in a small bowl. Brush the mixture leberally over the fish.
4. Grill or barbecue the fish for 3-4 mins each side. Brush frequently with the remaining basting mixture.
5. Garnish with lime slices and serve with salad leaves

We hope you enjoy the recipe and would love to hear your feedback on the dish or any suggestions of other oily fish recipes.  We regularly post news, tips and advice on our twitter and facebook page so please join us to keep up to date on all the latest news from Kirkwood Fyfe.

Win a FREE Pre-Operative Laser Eye Consultation worth £100...

Kirkwood Fyfe is dedicated to providing the highest standards of care we can for all our patients. One of the most increasingly popular procedures we carry out at Kirkwood Fyfe is laser eye surgery. During the month of September we are running a prize draw for everyone who 'likes' Kirkwood Fyfe's facebook page. The lucky winner will receive a FREE Pre-operative Consultation worth £100.

Laser Eye Surgery is one of the most popular procedures carried out at Kirkwood Fyfe and is becoming more and more popular as people want to be rid of the daily inconvenience of wearing glasses or contact lenses. We asked one of our recent patients, Fiona Rait, to give us an account of her experience, including how she found the Pre-operative Consultation, why she chose to get Laser Eye Surgery at Kirkwood Fyfe and how it has changed her life. In our previous post Fiona explained that the Pre-operative Consultation gave her the chance to understand the full process and for her questions to be answered. Read our previous post here.

Fiona's experience
Fiona Rait works in Byron Bakery and prior to having laser eye surgery had very restricted vision, which wasn't ideal, given her line of work. She chose to come to Kirkwood Fyfe to have the operation upon hearing of our excellent standard of care. During the operation Fiona felt very little discomfort and was treated with the utmost of care. She no longer has to deal with contact lenses or glasses as her vision is now excellent and she believes that the operation has been life changing.

At Kirkwood Fyfe we use Z-Lasik, which offers many advantages that lead to better results. These include faster visual recovery, the total procedure time is shorter, thinner flaps than alternative procedures, larger treatment area, reduced occurrence of Dry Eye Syndrome and reduced inflammation.

FREE Consultation
Although their are already free consultations available from high street chains, however, we believe in providing the highest customer care with the best advice and treatment. The consultation requires a great deal of time and attention by our top consultants and as a result Kirkwood Fyfe normally charge £100 per consultation. However, Kirkwood Fyfe are giving one of our lucky facebook fans a chance to receive the Pre-operative Consultation FREE. To be in with a chance of winning this amazing prize simply 'like' our facebook page to be entered into a prize draw.

Keep your eyes peeled (no pun intended) for our next post where we will discover how Fiona felt after her surgery and how she found the post-operative care.

To win a FREE Pre-operative Consultation worth £100, simply 'like' our page and you will be entered into the prize draw, which will be drawn on the 30th September 2011.
