How to relieve the symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome

At Kirkwood Fyfe we find a number of our patients suffer from Dry Eye Syndrome. Although this is a common condition, it can result in dry or sore eyes and/or blurred vision. The condition tends to affect people above 60, and it is more common in women than men. Around one in 13 people who are in their fifties experience dry eye syndrome, and the condition becomes more common with age.

A great, natural tip for relieving the symptoms of Dry eye syndrome is to eat foods that are high in omega 3. One type of food that will help to alleviate the dryness is oily fish, including salmon, trout, mackerel, herring and sardines. The naturally high oil content from the fish is a great source of omega 3 and helps to reduce the dryness in eyes. Although at Kirkwood Fyfe we are not master chef's, we do like to cook and also like to provide our online community with interesting tips and blog topics. So if you suffer from dry eyes, why not try one of Kirkwood Fyfe's favourite, tried and tested mackerel recipes. It's really easy and you will be rid of the dryness in no time!

Mackerel with Lime & Coriander (serves 4)
Ingredients:
  • 4 small mackerel, trout or sardines
  • 1/4 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/4 ground cumin
  • 4 sprigs of fresh coriander
  • 3 tbsp chopped, fresh coriander
  • 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped
  • grated rind and juice of 1 lime
  • 2 tbsp sunflower oil
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 lime, sliced, to garnish
  • salad leaves, to serve
1.Clean and gut the mackerel, removing the heads if preferred. Place on a chopping board.
2. Sprinkle the fish with the ground spices and salt and pepper to taste. Place a sprig of coriander inside the cavity of each fish
3. Mix together the chopped coriander, chilli, lime rind and juice and the oil in a small bowl. Brush the mixture leberally over the fish.
4. Grill or barbecue the fish for 3-4 mins each side. Brush frequently with the remaining basting mixture.
5. Garnish with lime slices and serve with salad leaves

We hope you enjoy the recipe and would love to hear your feedback on the dish or any suggestions of other oily fish recipes.  We regularly post news, tips and advice on our twitter and facebook page so please join us to keep up to date on all the latest news from Kirkwood Fyfe.

Kirkwood Fyfe's TOP BEAUTY TIPS...

At Kirkwood Fyfe we believe that great looks begins with beautiful skin and the secret to amazing looking skin is a solid skincare regime. We believe that everyone can achieve healthy, beautiful skin with the right products and the right knowledge. So we wanted to share some of our beauty secrets with you to help your skin look fresh and healthy.

  • Drink lots of water on a daily basis as the first 80% of what you drink directly helps to maintain healthy organs so drinking more will bring a noticeable result to the skin.
  • Exfoliate 2-3 times per week as you have 80-90% excess dead skin, which can cause cloged pores.
  • If you have tanned over the summer mix bronzer with your normal foundation to make the colour slightly darker rather than buying a new foundation.
  • Wash make-up brushes with soap and warm water and leave to dry naturally at least once per month as bacteria can build up and cause spots.
  • Always wear at least SPF 15 in all weather conditions as it gives some environmental protection.
  • Choose a moisturiser that contains water grabbing properties that plump up the skin, Kirkwood Fyfe recommends using something from our Priori skincare range.
Not only do we have a team of beauty experts based in house at Kirkwood Fyfe we also offer various  cosmetic surgery treatments that are becoming increasingly popular. Each procedure is carried out by one of  our team of top cosmetic surgeons. Please visit our website for more information or contact us directly on 01224 643 999 or you can email us on info@kirkwoodfyfe.com

We regularly post news, tips and advice on our twitter and facebook page so please join us to keep up to date on all the latest beauty trends.

Win a Pre-Operative Consultation for Laser Eye Surgery at Kirkwood Fyfe

Kirkwood Fyfe is dedicated to providing the highest standards of care we can for all our patients. One of the most increasingly popular procedures we carry out at Kirkwood Fyfe is laser eye surgery. During the month of September we are running a prize draw for everyone who 'likes' Kirkwood Fyfe's facebook page. The lucky winner will receive a FREE Pre-operative Consultation worth £100.

Laser Eye surgery is become more and more popular at Kirkwood Fyfe and we are finding that more of our patients are looking to improve their eye sight on a more permanent basis. In conjunction with our September Laser Eye competition, we have tracked the Laser Eye Surgery experience of one of our recent patients, Fiona Rait. In this post we explore the initial stages of the Laser Eye Surgery process, including the details of the Pre-operative Consultation, which our lucky winner of the competition will receive. In this we discover why Fiona, who recently went through the surgery, chose Kirkwood Fyfe and how she found the Pre-operative Consultation.

Customer's experience
Recently, Fiona Rait came to Kirkwood Fyfe to have laser eye surgery performed. Given Fiona's line of work in the Baking Industry, she felt that wearing glasses was impractical and inconvenient. Fiona chose to come to Kirkwood Fyfe after hearing about our excellent reputation and specialist aftercare and once we carried out the Pre-operative Consultation, we were only too happy to carry out the procedure.

We use Z-LASIK which is the most advanced innovation in bladeless surgery. This procedure uses a high-frequency laser. It is designed to create truly customized flaps, precisely, safely and pain-free. Its beam is a 100 times less intense than first-generation femtosecond lasers. Never before have safety, accuracy and patient comfort in laser eye surgery been so good, as proven by 750,000 successful Z-LASIK treatments.

Pre-Operative Consultation
Prior to the surgery we carry out a Pre-operative Examination to assess if each patient is a suitable candidate for the surgery. During the Pre-operative Consultation, we perform a Corneal Assessment and take various other technical photos and measurements to gain as much information about your eyes as possible. We also carry out a prescription simulation to show you what the finished result would be like.

The consultation lasts about an hour and we understand that the process can be a major operation to most people, this is why we ensure that every patient is treated with the utmost care and attention. Fiona explains, "The Pre-operative Consultation was excellent and the staff at Kirkwood Fyfe made me feel at ease. They were very informative and were able to answer all my questions."

Track Fiona's progress in the next 2 blog posts. We will look at what is involved in the procedure itself and find out Fiona's views and how she felt during and after the procedure.

To win a FREE Pre-operative Consultation worth £100, simply 'like' our page and you will be entered into the prize draw, which will be drawn on the 30th September 2011.
